"M A R P L E"

MARPLE – a collection of 12 short stories by 12 different authors on the crime writing theme “Miss Marple” as created by Agatha Christie. Miss Marple is always portrayed as an accidental participant in solving the question, “Who is the culprit (usually murderer)”, and with a shrewder insight than the local constabulary.

The short story format led to some constraints; there was little character development, and whilst the story settings varied greatly, the story structures did not. There were plenty of ingenious twists to provide entertainment. The appearance of the same named character in different stories was asurprise to the Miss Marple virgin(s) in the club.

Club members found it in general to be an easy but unsatisfying read, leading one member to borrow a “proper Agatha Christie” from the library to form a reference point.

The story of “The Jade Empress” was mentioned by more members than any other.

Doorly score: 3.15
