"Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine" by Gail Honeyman.

The book was read by Gail back in 2022 and chosen for 2023 on a re-read. It is a large tome, over 300 pages written entirely from the viewpoint of the protagonist, Gail, who is not entirely “fine” in spite of the title. Even as an office worker she leads a lonely life and relies on copious alcohol to take the edge off the weekends. The story is relieved by the somewhat scruffy technician Raymond, and various interactions such as hospital visiting.

There are various “reveals” as the story progresses and whilst relationships develop, including a fantasy love affair. The mental health issues emerge when the fantasy disappears. The introduction of the cat was seen as a “stroke of genius”.

The book resonated with club members who had been involved with social work of various kinds. And whilst it was not an easy read several members found it thought provoking.

At least one member hoped the book would descend into a nicely tangled love story.
