"A Terrible Kindness"
by Jo Browning Wroe.

The book was chosen by Rosie on a “skim through”, when it looked interesting and readable. It proved to be an emotionally harrowing exploration of relationships based around the Aberfan mining disaster of October 1966.

This is a book of exceptional perception and lucid prose with both heart rending and heart warming moments. The development of the main character through his actions and relationships was the central theme of the book and whilst characters were not easy to like (apart from Martin), they felt “warts and all” real as you read.

Most if not all of the club learned more about embalming than they ever wished to, and several were drawn to tears at the start of the narrative of William’s work at Aberfan.

The discussion included some interesting references to singing and how “boys will be boys”

This is beautiful, evocative writing at its best.

Doorly score: 4.7
