"Pride and Prejudice"
by Jane Austen.

Jane Austin's Pride and Prejudice, published in 1813 is, owing to its accessible prose and lively characters considered to be the perfect starting point for anyone launching into the collection.

The story describes how having produced five daughters Mr. and Mrs. Bennett realise they will lose an anticipated inheritance and that they need to take some action.

Mrs Bennett's solution would be to marry off her girls to wealthy men.... with humorous results. In what's become the tradition of love stories the world over their eldest daughter Elizabeth meets Mr Darcy and dislikes him - lots of pride and many prejudices emerge as they continue to bump into each other - the rest is history (and we've all read it or seen it at least once!)

Although over 200 years old the characters are all recognisable today.

The story, with its sparkling dialogue whilst examining social history and relationships is presented with Jane's satirical approach which moves it many miles away from being a love story and we are presented with an enduring masterpiece.
