"Emma" by Jane Austen.

I did not enjoy the book, largely because I found Emma (the main character) insufferable. Her attitude towards Harriet Smith was condescending and she manipulated the girl to “improve“ her and find her a “better” husband until Harriet began admiring Emma’s friend when she was abruptly dropped. She nearly upset Harriet’s happiness.

I was not convinced of the importance of a secret engagement in the secondary plot. The characters were well portrayed and the feeling of the claustrophobia of a small town was accurately drawn.
