The Stedman Doubles Project

Project Description

Primary Objective:
To study the learning process for a really hard method.

Project Diary
March - June 2019

Activity

  • None. Project on hold.

Project Diary
28th February 2019

Activity

  • 4 courses rung, all pairs for maintenance of learning.

Failures:

  • Not yet got anyone enthused enough to join the project.
  • Project on hold as of end Feb 2019.

Project Diary
31st January 2019

Activity

  • 21 courses on 1-2, maintenance of learning.
  • 43 started courses on 3-4, inconsistent until 17th January
  • Learning published on 1st Feb

Failures:

  • Not yet got anyone enthused enough to join the project.

Project Diary
31st December 2018

Activity

  • Project Objectives defined.
  • Printed the double blue lines
  • Memorised 1-2
  • Rang 5-6 21 times to get the method by blue line
  • Memorised 1-2 again in more detail
  • Rang 5-6 21 times to get the method by blue line (Abel)
  • Rang 1-2 20 times to ring first plain course to the end
  • Rang 1-2 a further 46 times before I could reliably ring a course at 2h 40 mins speed
  • Rang 1-2 a further 93 times before I could reliably ring a course at 2h 10 mins speed

Failures:

  • None, unless you count the fire-ups, and it took a lot longer than I expected
  • Not yet completed a course on 3-4

Learning:

  • Starting in the middle of a quick six screws up almost everything
  • You have to learn how to cross from six to six as well as learning the work inside the six
  • The quick sections (Tuesday / Thursday) are more trouble than Mon / Wed / Fri
  • The dodging is a real killer for a Bob Minor ringer, I learned to tackle it as 545454 rather than Double Dodge 4-5 down.
  • I began to recognise the tune.
  • Reciting is not the same as knowing.
  • Firing out in the last third is frustrating.

Project

Project Objectives

Period: 22nd May 2018 - 31st May, 2018.

Primary project objective:

  • Study the learning process for a really hard method.

Secondary project objectives:

  • Ring a peal of Stedman Doubles.
  • Create documentation for others to use.
  • Document the pitfalls

Project Approach

Suck it and see!
Stedman is so different from anything I have ever rung on handbells that all I have to go on is the one small piece of internet information suggesting learning the sixes by days of the week. I might even decide to digress into Erin.
