NB: First postcards in UK were sold by the Post Office with a stamp integral to the design.

1968 - 1971: 4d or 5d (1st class)
1971 - decimal currency introduced plus stamps marked 1st class or 2nd class with no value figure.3

Format, Address, correspondence instructions

Size:
1870 - 1899: Approved size: 4.5 x 3.5 inches
1899 - onwards: Approved size: 5.5 x 3.5 inches.4

Format:
1902: UK: Divided Back became acceptable.5
Borderless photo postcards, with the photo going all the way to the edge of the card, were dominant up until 1915.
N.B. Care needs to be taken with dates related to format as postcards can be in existence for several years before use.

Postmark6

1661: Postmarking introduced.
1713: Month switched from top to bottom of mark.
1840: The first postmark employed for the cancellation of the then new postage stamps in the 1840s was the shape of a Maltese cross and named accordingly.
1854: Perforated stamps introduced.
