Group h

6ths Place Minor Methods, Lead End: 156342

Introduction:

6ths place Lead End methods are less popular than 2nds place perhaps owing to the extra learning involved. The step from Plain Bob to Single Court (Group g) and Double Court (Group h, ibid) can be challenging.

However, there are 23 regular Treble Dodging Methods in Group h, so the challenges should not be avoided.

The lengths given below are for Plain Methods with a 60 change Plain Course. Applying the compositions to Little Methods where the Treble travels to 4ths place will produce a shorter length and to Treble Dodging a correspondingly longer length. Bobs-only touches of plain methods can be doubled with the appropriate use of singles.

Conducting Hint:

Following the Coursing Order is a basic conducting skill, and this can be applied to simple Treble Bob Methods such as Kent and Oxford Treble Bob, by noting the bells leaving and entering the Slow Work. This technique can be extended when ringing group h methods, viz:

For any 4 bells in sequence in the coursing order, (let's label them a, b, c, and d). When a is 2nds place bell, b is 4ths place bell, the pivot bell. At the half lead a and c cross with each other, and at the following Lead End, c is followed by d as the new 2nds place bell, and the process can be applied to the string of 4 bells in the Coursing Order starting at d.

Quoted lengths are for a method such as Double Court that has 60 Change Rows in the Plain Course.

Calls affecting the observation bell cause variations in the length of the course and the order of the calling positions and the composition layout is often unhelpful. We recommend generating the rows using complib, and printing the whole composition, as a step to understanding prior to calling.
