Goals

Goals and learning approach

What you are trying to achieve needs to drive your approach.

Ringing by structure

Get going. Sothwark is a useful stepping stone into the "London above" group; enjoy Bedford D, and Bumaby D, study London above, and then: Start ringing.
Use whatever learning approach you like most to acquire enough knowledge to ring a plain course. Ring a few and see what aspects of the method spring out, and study these. Practice until courses and simple touches are ringable.

Performance Level

If you are wishing to achieve 720s, Quarters, or peals:
start with the "get going" as above, add in the bits that are natural to you.
Improve your ability to survive trips by using the Double Place Bell sequences, and the lines.
Practice a lot.
Achieve some performances .

Method Mastery Level

It is unusual for a band to wish to achieve mastery in a method like Vale Royal Delight Minor.

The Rules

Assuming that Morning Star Treble Bob and London Surprise have already been learned:

Vale Royal Delight Minor - the rules
Ring London Surprise over Morning Star Treble Bob, but with a fifths place half-lead.

The Structure

Familiarity with the grid is always valuable. Use of the grid is helped enormously by an ability to see the position of treble.

Artefacts

The Blue Line features worth noting are:

  • The transitions into and out of backward hunting and their relationship with the treble.
  • The 3rds place bell fishtail can be thought of as a point 6ths followed by 5-6 down.

Place Notation and Grid

The choice here is personal preference. The author’s preference is the visual nature of the grid.

Pictels

As per all regular Treble dodging methods, the 3-4 sections are X12X, i.e. visually identical with a Plain Bob Lead End.
The 5-6 sections are a 4-bell hunting box in 1-2-3-4 and dodging in 5-6; PIvot bell makes 4ths-3rds-4ths whivh links the hunting boxes together.

Track the treble

Awareness of the position of the treble is a key skill for most bellringing methods, and a significant help in ringing Southwark Delight Minor. Some hints and tips for developing the skill are given in the techniques section.

Positional Awareness

The backward hunting of London Surprise needs to be thoroughly learned before picking up the bells.

Place Notation Elements

The method contains 36x36, X, 14, 12, 16, 34, 56.

5-6:6-5, 2-4, 5-3, 4-6, 3-2, 6-5 :

Pivot Positions.
3-4 pivot by dodging together in 1-2 at the Half Lead, (in the 3-pull).
5-6 pivot by dodging together in 3-4 at the Half Lead, (the dodge in far-dodge-near).

Awareness of other bells

The pair that are adjacent in the coursing order spend time 1-apart in the backward hunting above the treble, but otherwise are normally well separated in the changes.

Coursing Order in Vale Royal Delight Minor

The Coursing Order needs close study for it to be helpful.

Ringing the Method

Just enjoy it, it’s easier than expected, and a valuable route into ringing London above.
