Treble Dodging Minor - Evesham Delight

Evesham Delight Minor

About Evesham Delight Minor

Evesham Delight Minor is best thought of as a combination of Carlisle Surprise above the treble combined with Morning Star Treble Bob below.

5ths place bell is the pivot bell and with the 2nds place lead end, the calling sequence for 6ths observation is as per St. Clement's College Bob.

Evesham Delight Minor is one of a group of 5 Treble Dodging methods all having identical work below the treble.

Given the straightforward nature of Morning Star Treble Bob, Evesham Delight Minor is suitable as a first method to tackle in the "Melrose above" group.

Goals

Goals and learning approach

What you are trying to achieve needs to drive your approach.

Ringing by structure

If you are ringing any method to gain the skill of associating method structure with the work of the treble (valid goal), DO NOT learn the lines, learn the structure, ring, make mistakes and learn from them. Track-the Treble skills, Place Notation skills, coursing order skills can all be developed in this manner

Performance Level

If you are wishing to achieve 720s, Quarters, or peals:
start with the structural ringing as above, add in the bits that are natural to you.
Study the lines.
Practice a lot.
Achieve some performances .

Method Mastery Level

It is unusual for a band to wish to achieve mastery in a method like Evesham. However, investment of time in this method will pay dividends when further "Melrose above" methods are tackled.

Learning

Learning Evesham Delight Minor.

The Structure

Experience of ringing St. Clement's College Bob, with the specific calling sequence is valuable when first ringing Evesham Delight.
Experience of ringing other Melrose Group methods above the treble is valuable when first ringing Evesham Delight unless Evesham has been chosen as an entry point to the Melrose Group.

Artefacts
Place Notation

Artefacts

Melrose Delight is a cardinal method and the above-the-treble artefacts are discussed under Carlisle Surprise. The Morning Star work below the treble is straight-forward right place with Oxford places in the 5-6 section.

Place Notation and Grid

The pictorial grid emphasises the structure of the method better than the Place Notation.

Pictels

The rules are a good approach to the method, and splitting into individual elements is of no value.

Ringing

Ringing Evesham Delight Minor.

Track the treble

Awareness of the position of the treble is a key skill for most bellringing methods, and is the major key to ringing Tintern Delight Minor. Some hints and tips for developing the skill are given in the techniques section.

Positional Awareness

The Melrose D. / Carlisle S. specific work (1-2 section) requires detailed attention, careful learning and good practice. Evesham Delight could be used as a progress route into ringing either Melrose or Carlisle above.

Place Notation Elements

The method only contains 5 elements: 34X36, 12, 14, 34, 16.

Place Bells, Pivot Leads, and Staging posts

142635 LE 12: St Clement's C.B.; Rochester T.B.; London S.

1-2:1-2, 1-3, 1-5, 1-6, 1-4, 1-2
3-4:3-4, 5-2, 6-3, 4-5, 2-6, 3-4
5-6:6-5, 4-6, 2-4, 3-2, 5-3, 6-5

For 3-4 pair, the pivot point is when they cross over in 4-5 at the Half Lead.
For 5-6 pair, the pivot point is when they cross over in 2-3 at the Half Lead.

Awareness of other bells

Most ringers on encountering Evesham Delight find it quite tricky to ring, the serious challenges arising from the backward work above the treble.

Coursing Order in Evesham Delight Minor

As the bells transition from the backward hunting above the treble (3-4 section), a complex representation of the coursing order emerges. 5ths place bell is the pivot bell, and its afterbell follows it down and turns round in 3rds. That afterbell then crosses in 4-5 with the oivot bell's forebell, which then makes thirds and precedes the pivot bell towards lie.

Further aspects of the coursing .order can be developed from the above.

Ringing the Method

We have little experience of ringing this method.

Calls

Bobs and Singles.

Bobs replace the 2nds place at the Lead End with 4ths. This makes the calls feel like Kent Treble Bob with the long 4ths.

Singles Singles are rarely used in Tewkesbury Delight Minor.

Touches

Touches of Tewkesbury Delight Minor.

5ths place bell is the pivot bell, and hence the first lead end is 142635 giving calling positions from the tenor as:
In, Out, 4ths, Wrong, Home as per St. Clement's Bob.
